My Evaluation

This is the Evaluation for my music video, Supernova. To keep in line with the music video and artist promotion for the project I decided to stage my evaluation as a 4 Music Interview. For this I had to hire the drama room and use the professional lighting and stage to create a recognisable and nearly identical mise-en-scene similar to the show. I then had to also get my friend and drama student Samuel Wayne to act as a host. We then shot the evaluation and for each question filmed the answers from several different angles. For some of the angles i shot them from peculiar angles such as a high angle and extremely low angle as this is a shooting style frequently used in the show so my video would further look like on the show.

My Music Video

This is a fully edited version of my music video. One change i have made since from the animatic, is to include another shot of the girl within the first section to make her prescence more well known throughout the video. I have edited the scenes with her in more carefully as well to make the shots seem more like a memory. I have done this by having them fading in and out so it seems like a flashback.

Copyright Issues

For my music video I chose to re-record the song with myself and Daniel Josiah singing the song rather than use the original song. So as the song is my own work I do not need to seek permission for the use of the song.

Genre Codes and Conventions and How I Used Them.

Music Video Genre Conventions - R N' B / Solo Artist

* Focus is on star, enforcing star image.
- I have included many close ups of my artist both singing separately and together, 100% of my video is of the artist.

* Often focus on wealth or materialistic possessions. This often includes product placement e.g. Jaguar XJ in Jay Z's song 'On To The Next One'
- Both of my artists are dressed in smart suits with smart bits of jewellery on but not too much or too elaborate jewllery. There is also more expensive and 'smart' props and mise-en-scene such as an orient express photo in a silver frame in the background.

* Links between lyrics and visual.
- During the chorus the singers are singing in the dark surrounded by stars. Also the lead singer at time is singing alone as he is singing about a break up at points/heartbreak.

* Many Close ups of the artist
- My video is 100% of the artist and includes many close ups and mid-shots of the artist.

* Featuring of beautiful women
- At times a woman is present in a few of the shots to symbolise a previous relationship.

* Post Production Effects.
- My song has the artists singing in the dark whilst being surrounded by stars flying towards the screen which were edited in to re-enfforce the 'supernova feel.

Rich Mix Studio Trip

Not long ago, our class went up to Rochdale, London to the Rich Mix Studios to take part in a music video presentation. Several other colleges and sixth forms who are also studying media A2 attended the event which was specifically made to help us with our coursework. There were several guest speakers who had presentations which helped us in different aspects of the course.

The first speaker was by the cheif examiner of the board who gave a presentation which covered music videos from the 30's until now. This also covered what forms they have taken over the years and how successful they can be whether or not they have a high budget or not. This man also then spoke about the course itself and what our research and film should include and what needed to be done to gain the most marks possible. He also then gave us some example music videos from his students showing us a different spectrum of work including comedic parodies and serious ones and how spoke about how both were filmed.

The second speaker was a woman who was a music video producer. She showed us a variety of videos being both high or low budget and also shocking and the effect these had. We studied three low budget videos first and spoke about how each displayed their subject matter differently and also how they reflected the image of the band, which is very important and helpful to us as these aspects relate directly to our work as we had to relate to our music but also work with a small budget to the best of our ability which all these music videos did so they were all very helpful. We also then studied a few shocking and banned videos and saw what was deemed acceptable for an audience. We also saw how effective some low budget music videos can be by how creatively they are choreographed and shot. The main example of this is a song called 'Cash in my pocket' By Wiley featuring Mark Ronson. The video for this song is filmed like it is on a handheld camera and it goes around an office whilst all the employees in turn sing the song. It is a very funny video however it has been removed from youtube so I am unable to attach it onto this blog.

The last speaker was by the music video director Corin Hardy who has worked with many big named artists such as Keane, The Prodigy, Fightstar and Paolo Nutini. He has a signature style in many of his videos as he likes to use alot of animation. He went on to talk about how the main videos of his were made and how he planned each one to fit the song and band. To get us involved we listened to the new Paolo Nutini track, 'Pencil Full of Lead' which Coring had recently made a video for and then we had to work as a group and pitch an idea of our own for the video to him. When putting together our idea we took into consideration the genre and feel to the song as it is a very distinct 30's/40's jazz style record, we also noted lyrics and incorporated them using animation techniques so it would be close to Corins style of video. I had the task of pitching the idea to Corin and they liked the idea and thought that it was good but had quite a high budget. We then watched the video and then several others Corin has directed.

This is a low budget music video Corin Hardy made for the band called The Horrors and the song 'She is the New Thing'

Overall this day was very helpful as I learnt alot about what I needed to include in my research and coursework in general. I also learnt alot about the history and production of music videos which was all very interesting and i learnt alot over the course of the day.
