Rich Mix Studio Trip

Not long ago, our class went up to Rochdale, London to the Rich Mix Studios to take part in a music video presentation. Several other colleges and sixth forms who are also studying media A2 attended the event which was specifically made to help us with our coursework. There were several guest speakers who had presentations which helped us in different aspects of the course.

The first speaker was by the cheif examiner of the board who gave a presentation which covered music videos from the 30's until now. This also covered what forms they have taken over the years and how successful they can be whether or not they have a high budget or not. This man also then spoke about the course itself and what our research and film should include and what needed to be done to gain the most marks possible. He also then gave us some example music videos from his students showing us a different spectrum of work including comedic parodies and serious ones and how spoke about how both were filmed.

The second speaker was a woman who was a music video producer. She showed us a variety of videos being both high or low budget and also shocking and the effect these had. We studied three low budget videos first and spoke about how each displayed their subject matter differently and also how they reflected the image of the band, which is very important and helpful to us as these aspects relate directly to our work as we had to relate to our music but also work with a small budget to the best of our ability which all these music videos did so they were all very helpful. We also then studied a few shocking and banned videos and saw what was deemed acceptable for an audience. We also saw how effective some low budget music videos can be by how creatively they are choreographed and shot. The main example of this is a song called 'Cash in my pocket' By Wiley featuring Mark Ronson. The video for this song is filmed like it is on a handheld camera and it goes around an office whilst all the employees in turn sing the song. It is a very funny video however it has been removed from youtube so I am unable to attach it onto this blog.

The last speaker was by the music video director Corin Hardy who has worked with many big named artists such as Keane, The Prodigy, Fightstar and Paolo Nutini. He has a signature style in many of his videos as he likes to use alot of animation. He went on to talk about how the main videos of his were made and how he planned each one to fit the song and band. To get us involved we listened to the new Paolo Nutini track, 'Pencil Full of Lead' which Coring had recently made a video for and then we had to work as a group and pitch an idea of our own for the video to him. When putting together our idea we took into consideration the genre and feel to the song as it is a very distinct 30's/40's jazz style record, we also noted lyrics and incorporated them using animation techniques so it would be close to Corins style of video. I had the task of pitching the idea to Corin and they liked the idea and thought that it was good but had quite a high budget. We then watched the video and then several others Corin has directed.

This is a low budget music video Corin Hardy made for the band called The Horrors and the song 'She is the New Thing'

Overall this day was very helpful as I learnt alot about what I needed to include in my research and coursework in general. I also learnt alot about the history and production of music videos which was all very interesting and i learnt alot over the course of the day.

Supernova - Animatic

This is the animatic for my music video. I am pleased with the flow of the music video and how it looks. Now i put together the flow of the video I can see now where I will need to change the video and see where differing shots need to be included.

One change I want to make is to add more shots in which are of the girl, at the moment i have only used two or 3 shots and i don't think this is enough as it doesn't establish her purpose in the scene properly. Along side the shots included in the video so far I have also taken 2 other shots using a pan going across her body and also another using a zoom motion going onto the girls face. I am going to include another one of these shots in the first verse of the song and also the other in the second verse, so her presence is felt throughout the song.

Another change I wish to make is to shorten the length of the last four shots, i am thinking of doing this as the other shots throughout the video are of similar lengths being short, however the last segment seems to have longer shots which are the same, I am thinking about adding some more movement based shots in this last part to see how it works.

However aside from these changes, I am very pleased with my video and will now go on to edit the footage together in the same way as i have planned in my storyboard and animatic with the changes I wish to make.

Storyboard

Supernova Storyboard

This is the storyboard for my music video. I have put this together using performance shots and also memory/flashback shots so the content of the scene is continuously being contradicted to help show the context of the song lyrics. I have done this by at times choosing to use alternating shot and editing them together with fades to give the feel of a memory.

From this i am going to now make an animatic, to see how the video will flow/look and then go on to edit. The final piece will most likely differ from what is shown here as this is a rough draft of my final piece, other changes will be mde in the later stages of production.

Subsidary Task 2 - Website Homepage

This is a plan for the second Subsidary task, it is a home page for my fictional artists website. I designed this on microsoft word primarily so i could have a rough copy of what i wished the final product to resemble. I chose to have the main photo black and white, similar to the album cover as it goes with the overall feel and look i am going for with this project. I wanted to give this artist a more emotional and raw feeling to him and also give a real professional and mainstream feel to the whole product.

Now i have the plan for this, i am now going to use the programme Macromedia Dreamweaver to create this homepage properly.

Website Planning

My second subsidary task i chose to do was a website home page for my artist. When designing this I had to make sure that I researched other website designs carefully in order to make a good, clear one.

The one i took most inspiraion from was the Razorlight and Kanye West. This was because they were both clear and not too littered of random news and information on the home page.

An example of the littered home page was from The Enemy and Mr Hudson. Both had lots of information about tours and album reviews/information. I thought this was too messy however and it would be too hard to read/take in.

This website from Kanye West is much more clear. It only has a picture, which relates directly to his album, video and image. It also has a bar along the top with links to relevant pages on. Everything is very clear and easy to read and take in. This is a perfect example of inspiration for my website and I want to make my own website in co-ordance with this one.

Subsidary Task - Album Cover

Alongside the primary task of the music video, we have to also create another two products, which support the main task. One of my chosen two tasks was the creation of a DVD 4 page Digipak cover for my featured artist 'James Longley.' The title of the album came from my coursework at AS where i created a music magazine with a double page spread featuring my artist and i decided at that point that the debut album, which brought my artist to success was to be called 'Everything Else Has Gone.' I chose this title as it is emotional and links with the subject matter of the song 'Supernova,' which i wrote about in the DPS.

The main image on the cover is a shot which i took when filming one of the shots for my music video. However it is not a close up and instead is a wide angle mid shot showing a lot of the surrouding set, E.G the lights and mise-en-scene. I chose to do this as it goes along with the title of the album. 'Everything Else Has Gone,' shows that by having the fame and attention the singer has lost normality in his life. This is shown by the artist sitting on set surrounded by the lights and equipment on his own, looking slightly upset.

I have edited this photo using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0. Firstly I chose to change the colouring of the photo to black and white. I did this so the image had a dark, sad feeling to it. Also by having the photo in Black and white I was able to edit the photo in a different way, similar to how I edited the front cover of my magazine at AS. I chose to focus on certain items in the room, E.G the clock and fairy lights. I chose to do this as I was very pleased with this method when I used it for my AS project and the style is similar to one of the artists that my fictional artist is based around, Mr Hudson who wrote and performed the song, 'Supernova.'

On the cover of the DVD I included made reference to how I plan to do my evaluation and say about how it will be included within the Digipak, a TV style interview.

On the back page, I decided that I would have the album track titles, information about what is on the DVD and also the normal logos at the bottom, including a PG rating and the artists fictional website.

On the two inside pages I wrote out the story behind the DVD and information for the reader about the year my artist has had and also a more in-depth look at what is on the DVD.

Rejected Images For Subsidary Tasks

Here are some of the images I was considering using for my CD cover and why i eventually chose not to use them.

This photo was a possibility, however it is of both artists singing the song 'Supernova.' The reason this is an issue is because the single would have been the only collaboration with the other artist and so if he was on the cover of the album it would take away the appeal to the market that it is a solo project.

This photo was not chosen as I thought it was too close up of the artist and was not 'flattering enough' for a front cover image. Also I think the photo doesn't represent enough for the meaning of the album so it seems pretty pointless as a photo for the cover.

Album Cover Image

This is the photo I have chosen for the front cover of my album. It is a shot I took whilst filming my video of my artist sitting on the bed surrounded by all the filming equiptment looking sad. I chose this as it represents the title of the album perfectly which is 'Everything Else Has Gone,' by having the artist surrounded by filming equiptment and no people is showing how his life is all to do with music/filming and everything else he had before has now gone.

I wanted to edit this photo however. I chose to turn it black and white. I made this decision as it would be furthering the contexts that the artists life has become not as joyful since becoming so famous. Also i wanted to edit the image further by having bright colours on certain parts of the photo. The Clock and fairy lights i have chosen to colour in, this is beacuse this is symbolising the bright future he has and 'name in lights' aspect to his life. Also i think it adds more edge to the photo and brightens it up.

Subsidary Task - Album Cover Research

This is the cover for 'Dusk and Summer,' by artist 'Dashboard Confessional' who my artist for AS was based on. The focus of the cover is on the lead singer of the band and the most profilic member of the band, Chris Carrabba. The Title is in the corner in a small basic font.
The colours on the cover are very prolific for the genre. The mood of the band/album is very mellow and the theme of the album is around summer so the colour pallet used for the cover is dominantly oranges and yellow.
From this cover I can see that the main focus should be on the artist and also the mood of the song/album has to be present on the front cover too.

This cover is for another influence of my featured artist Mr Hudson, the original recording artist, along with Kanye West for the song I am using in my music video, Supernova. This is the cover for his latest album and different style form his previous album, being more electronic and hip-hop influenced.
There is no scenery around Mr Hudson on this cover and the focus is dominantly on him. The picture itself is heavily edited with different colours of Mr Hudson behind him, in a shadow type of form. This is symbolising the different musical sides to Mr Hudson.
This heavily edited focus on the artist is something I wish to use in my work too. I think it will be good to show the more emotional side/different elements to the album/artist.

Jay Z - On To The Next One Video Analysis

Using Goodwins Theory.

1) The video demonstrates genre characteristics:
* Black and White filming, more gritty and urban feel
* Close ups of 'Gangsta' items. E.g. Bling, shoes, Cars
* Sunglasses, dark - Rich and celebrity feel to it.

2) Lyrics and Visual
* Talks about money and shows visuals of expensive items. (wealth)
* Talks about moving onto something new and all the people/imagery changes during the course of the video (moving onto something different)

3) Lots of Visuals of Artist
* Close ups of Jay Z's face and also his iconic dress wear.

4) Use of artist motif/symbol
* On the car there is the the logo from Jay Z's latest album painted on the side. Also this is features in many other places throughout the song e.g. on the instruments
* Also Jay Z is known for his style of wearing black clothes and sunglasses, both of which he is wearing in this video.

Planning and Research

When building my core research for the making of the video, I decided that it would be fun and more creative if instead of using the original song to make a video for, myself and Dan, who is fictional hip-hop musician ‘Dan-I-Am,’ should actually record our own cover of the song using special recording software called ‘Auto-tune,’ which is used in this song to create the special effects on the voices. This worked very well and the song ended up sounding good and so I decided on going ahead with creating a music video for this version of the song, once again building further on the article I created for my AS project.

Before I began with filming I had to research music videos and started off by watching the original video for our song by Kanye West and Mr Hudson, I wanted to make my video so it is fairly similar to the original but with other effects making it different. I also watched other videos in this genre, which included such songs as Heartless and Love Lockdown by Kanye West, Human by The Killers and DOA by Jay Z. These all seemed to use one dominant colour in their videos, which related to the theme of the song or suited the feel of the song or the video. I thought this was a good effect to have and looked at the lyrics for ‘Supernova’ and studied its themes and contexts. I decided as it is a song about loosing someone or a bad relationship I decided that the colour blue would be good as the video will be shot showing the artists singing the song alone feeling, ‘blue.’ I chose a lighter blue would be better as not only does it have the certain feel for it, which I wished for, which was like a slight depression, but it is also very light and close to white, showing that the singer is pure and good showing a good clean cut image. I also watched other videos in all genres to widen my knowledge of how to display certain emotions and ways of filming a music video.

I chose a clean cut, smart image for my video by having the musicians singing whilst dressed in smart casual suits so they looked fashionable and smart at the same time. This fits in well with my own musicians, ‘straight-edge’ lifestyle, which I created for him in my magazine coursework. He has to be seen as clean cut and a ‘good’ person throughout as he is a role model for his audience and doesn’t want to set a bad example.

Here are the videos, which I watched when researching my video.

This is the original video and music for the song 'Supernova' by Mr Hudson and Kanye West.
I like this video alot and as my storyline for my fictional artist in my AS coursework is so similar to that of Mr Hudson, I wish to make my video very similar to this one as I intend to slightly mirror the path to mainstream success like Mr Hudson.

This is DOA by Jay Z. I chose to watch this song as it is by the incredibly popular Hip-Hop artist Jay Z and similar to the style of music that my song is and he is an artist which is closely linked to the song due to Jay, Kanye and Mr Hudson work together alot collaborating and producing music.
I liked this video alot as it has a real raw feel to it and also tend to focus on one shade of colour, dark orange.

This is the music video for Human by The Killers. This music video is slightly different to the other ones i have watched when researching. This is because it is by the popular rock group The Killers who make music which is in a different genre to mine, however this song has a real electronic beat and rythm to it similar to Mr Hudsons new style and this song and genre so i thought it would be good to watch.
In this video one key feature is that it is set in the desert. This directly relates to the image of the band. They are from Las Vegas and their style focus's on this and the Las Vegas deserts rather than the casino side. Another good point to this video is that it is focused around the performance from the band particularly the lead singer.

This video is one of two sings i researched by the Hip-Hop artist Kanye West. His new unique style of Hip-Hop is the most similar to that of Mr Hudson so i thought that his videos would be the most influential too for my own.
This video is done as an animation but still focus's on the lead singer performing his song and the deliberate use of bold colours.

This is the second video i researched of Kanye West's. This one is titled 'Love Lockdown' and focus's on the performance of Kanye West in a pure white room. However when the African style drum beat kicks in Arican tribal men start to appear and many other action relating to the style of rythm is shown.
This showed me a lot about the song and how to show the contexts within a song within the video. Even though the music video is similar to the others and features one distinct colour and focus on the artist it is very different also.

Uni Course Preparation Music Video

In preparation for this project myself and other students were given the opportunity to go on a media course at a university as part of a summer school to create a music video in a professional studio. We spent several days learning how to shoot a video for a live band, lighting, sound, editing, camera work and everything. This was very helpful as it gave me a further understanding of how to make my own video for this project and how I would go about shooting various scenes and putting together the final edit and such. The video was for a song called ‘Departure’ by a local upcoming band called Furion. Whilst filming we had to take into consideration the bands music style and image and decided that just a raw video of them performing in a rehearsal space would be best suited for the song and band. This also helped me with my understanding of my own music video as I then took into consideration the style and image for my own fictional musicians and how I wish them to be seen and represented in the video.
Written Concept

Filming and Shots to be Used

During the summer holidays, so I could ensure alot of necessary time for my project and that I wasnt rushed to finish my work to a sub-standard level in time for my deadline, I decided to get on and begin work on my music video.

I had already known the song I wanted to use, which is 'Supernova' by Mr Hudson as it works excellently alongside my previous coursework task for A2. I then asked my friend and collaborator in many other tasks, Dan Josiah to be in it as well. We decided on two days to film and then also set aside another day to record the song together. The song took a day to record and edit with the effects to make it sound similar to the original. We then spent the next two days filming. Before this however I made sure that I was prepared with a list of shots, angles and settings to be used. This was easier for me as I decided to make my video as close to the original as possible.

Here is the list of shots to be included:

* Outside night shot of each artist singing in a mid-shot.
* Lead singer, sitting on the bed in a low-angle mid-shot singing.
* Lead Singer and collaborative singer singing together against a wall.
* Collaborative singer on his own in a mid-shot
* Collaborative singer singing on the sofa
* Shot of lead singer and a woman stroking his chest on the bed.
* Various close-ups and pans of the woman.
* Close up of lead singer singing

When it came to filming as I was going along, I included other shots i thought would be good for the video. These included:

* A zoom of the collaborative singer looking into the mirror
* A close up of the lead singer falling onto the bed (to be edited by being slowed down and used in the lead up to the bridge)

Introduction

Hello, my name is James Longley and for my music video I have decided on creating a video for the song ‘Supernova’ by Mr. Hudson and Kanye West.

I chose this song as it is a collaboration between two fairly different artists similar to the story in, which I created for my music magazine in my coursework for AS. In my article my fictional acoustic rock musician, James Longley had written and recorded a song with hip-hop artist Dan-I-Am, which is very similar to how this song, ‘Supernova’ was written and performed so now I can work on building on my article from AS with making a music video for the song.

The original song of supernova fits perfectly into my storyline for my musician. Mr hudsons breakthrough mainstream song was this collaboration with his friend and hip-hop star Kanye West. My musicians breakthrough mainstream song is a collaboration with fictional hip-hop star and friend Dan.I.Am. So this proved to me to be the perfect song to choose to make a video for. This also gave me the idea to keep my video very similar to the original. I chose to do this as the story of the production and release of this song is so similar to my own that I wanted to keep it even more similar by keeping the video nearly the same too.
